Mr Scarborough s Family Anthony Trollope Books

First off, this is a no frills version of this Victorian novel - so if you aren't comfortable with the literature of the time, you might be better served finding an annotated edition. If you have read Trollope novels before, this is a great affordable addition (although some of the collected works are so cheap now that maybe it isn't a factor anymore).

To me this is one of the most interesting of Trollope's novels - maybe not ranking among his best, but certainly different in feel and tone. The novel's heroine is classic Trollope: Spunky, but loyal and completely predictable. The gentlemen, however, give us more diversity than the standard Trollope: The lazy heir, the ruined gambler, the truly devious younger brother, and, crowning it all, the immoral dying family elder. Trollope takes us on a twisting ride of a story, and by the end it is hard to say who we should be rooting for. It says a lot that the most sympathetic character in the book is probably the hapless old lawyer caught in the midst of all the intrigues.

The reader should be warned that Trollope is not up to modern standards in terms of sexism and antisemitism. In particular, Jews are synonymous with moneylenders of the worst sort in this book. The women put up with a large amount of what would now be considered harassment, but which passed for flirtation in the day.

Mr Scarborough s Family Anthony Trollope Books Reviews

I chose this book because it was written by Anthony Trollope. His books always have a plot and to me are very interesting. I will read anything written by him
Almost the last novel Trollope wrote before his death. The usual wonderful variety of characters, good, bad and in-between, with their motives and thought proccesses beautifully described. As always, a good story.
Not the best but quite good Trollope.
I enjoyed the completely unique idea of the plot a man purposely trying to get around an entail. But I feel that the ending was unsatisfactory. Too many of the characters were left hanging with no resolution.
The first novel about Scarborough family is very good. The second novel in this two novel set is slow moving and hard to get thru.
This was an entertaining read, as almost all of Trollope's books are, but the premise is quite frankly ridiculous. What man in his 20s would hide his first marriage and fake a second marriage in order to, possibly, 30 years down the line, defeat the law of entail? And which woman would agree to run the risk of having her reputation defiled in order to gratify her husband's whim in this matter? Completely ridiculous.
Is Mountjoy Scarborough, the heir to Tretton Park, illegitimate? His father says he is, and his father ought to know. Or is the declaration of Mountjoy’s illegitimacy merely a clever ploy to defeat the Scarborough heir’s many creditors, who will seize the estate as soon as Mountjoy inherits? Mountjoy’s younger brother, Augustus, steps in as heir, but it is clear that he is a villain who is up to no good. Lawyer Grey, the dying elder Scarborough’s attorney, tries to see the right thing done, but what is the right thing? The Scarborough family is a mess The father is a rogue, the older son is a drunkard and compulsive gambler, and the younger son is greedy and underhanded. The only one who is loyal to the Scarborough family is their long-suffering lawyer, and everything he does seems to make things worse. Meanwhile, Mr Scarborough’s niece, Florence Mountjoy, persists in her love for young Harry Annesley despite Mountjoy Scarborough’s obsessive attachment to her. Is there any way out of the Scarborough family’s mess? The dying Mr. Scarborough still has a trick or two left up his sleeve. You have to read it to believe it.
